Clump shot of WALT LOWRY

WALT LOWRY is a dormant progeny of Tet. Skinwalker crossed to a clean dormant seedling from Moldovan and Webster breeding.  The burgundy purple self is highlighted by the large green throat of like Skinwalker’s.  The throat extents out so far on the petals and sepals that it is almost like a watermark.  WALT LOWRY has proven its hardiness by growing well at the gardens of Bryan Culver, Ontario, and Bill Waldrop, Georgia.  Walt Lowry has been a visitor favorite since it first bloomed in the select seedling bed.

The daylily has been so popular and impressive in our garden that I choose to name it for my father.  WALT LOWRY stood tall even in 60 mile an hour winds last summer.  Of the twenty blooming scapes only four leaned when the storm was over.  I attribute the strong scape and good plant habit to the Moldovan genetics.

I have never successfully set a pod on this daylily, but the pollen is good.  In our area the pollen is best when the bud is picked the afternoon before it opens and taken inside for the night.  I’m introducing WALT LOWRY as a extra large flower because the pinching and curling is not always consistent, but each flower is always pleasing to the eye.
